Plants for summer colour at Greenshutters Garden Centre

We have had a wonderful spring with lots sunshine and, despite the recent heavy downpours, it has been an extremely dry with barely any rain in April and May. However, the recent rain has made digging (and weeding!) much easier. You can plant any time you can get a spade in the ground as long as you keep your new plants watered.

There were a few cold nights in May but June is safe to plant out tender bedding and basket plants as well as veg plants such as beans and sweetcorn. We still have a good range of plants for summer colour available.

If you want to brighten up your garden or house instantly, why not buy one of our ready planted hanging baskets or planted pots.

It is not too late to plant your own – they will go on flowering all summer and well into the autumn.  Just keep them fed with Miracle-Gro Plant Feed and water them often.  Alternatively, we are happy to plant up pots and hanging baskets to order, either refilling old pots and baskets or new ones.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

We have a new range of decorative stone available from the Heritage Stone Company in large bags (approx 20kg). These include Scottish Cobbles (50-75mm), Dorset Pebbles (20-40mm), Cotwold Chippings (20mm), Plum Slate (20mm), Pea Gravel (10mm), Golden Flint (20mm) as well as our usual Horticultural Grit.

We have plenty of plants for summer colour in your garden.  Shrubs such as the new Black Diamond Hydrangea ‘Red Angel’ will grow in any soil, in a border or as a specimen shrub on its own.  Cistus ‘Silver Pink’ is a small, evergreen shrub that has papery, pink flowers all summer long. The elderflower Sambucus ‘Black Beauty’ will not only produce a stunning show of clusters of pink flowers against its purple leaves but can also be used to make pink elderflower cordial – see our fantastic specimen in planted at the bottom of the car park.

Climbers such as the honeysuckle, Lonicera Scentsation, have yellow flowers with a wonderful fragrance to fill the garden on a summer’s evening. Fremontendron ‘California Glory’ has showy, bright yellow flowers and will grow well up a south-facing wall.

Herbaceous Perennials are flowering plants that will give you that ‘Cottage Garden’ look with many of them flowering all summer.

There are tall plants for the back of the border such as Verbascum ‘Helen Johnson’ and Penstemon ’Blackbird’ that flowers all summer long. For the front of the border, there are smaller plants such as Hardy Gloxinia (Incarvillea delavayi) with its exotic trumpet shaped pink or white flowers and Salvia Farina ‘Bicolour Blue’ with its striking blue and white flowers.

The summer-flowering champions are the bedding and basket plants such as the Cape Daisy (Osteospermum) and Zonal Geranium available in lots of different colours that flower all summer long.  Fuchsia, Verbena, Bacopa, Begonia and Lobelia are also colourful in pots and hanging baskets.  There is plenty of summer left so  pop in and pick up some plants to brighten up your garden.

We have had a very busy spring, thanks to all of you who have supported us, and for your patience at the peak busy periods if you have had to wait to be served.

Have a good summer in the garden.
